Miami 10 March 20, 2010 ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 12-ranked Michigan (5-4) pulled away in the second half en route to its fifth-consecutive victory with an 18-10 triumph over Miami University (0-2). The comeback victory marked the second straight game in which the Wolverines have rebounded from an early deficit to pull out the win. Sophomore Alaina Mezwa (Rochester Hills, Mich./Sacred Heart) turned in her best performance of the season, finishing the game tied with Johnson with a game-high four goals while adding two helpers. Mezwa scored several highlight goals using her speed to roar past any Redhawk defenders who had the misfortune of trying to keep pace with the speedy sophomore. Miami struck first with a goal on its opening possession but Michigan got a rare defenseman goal when sophomore Kelsey Martin (Radnor, Pa./Radnor) picked up a ground-ball and sprinted down the field to score her second of the season. The Redhawks answered to go back on top 2-1 but the Wolverines responded with a 4-0 run. Senior Amy Johnson (Washington, D.C./Holton-Arms) started the scoring with her 15th goal of the season to tie the game 2-2. Sophomore Ani Shekerjian (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) gave the Wolverines their first lead of the day with her 12th goal of the year. Junior tri-captain Britt Boehm (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat) and fellow captain senior Arielle Dyner (Livingston, N.J.) tacked on back-to-back goals to give Michigan a 5-2 lead. Miami scored the next three in a row to tie the game at 5-5 before Mezwa and junior Jess Stanley (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Marian) converted a pair of free-positions within 0:27 to put the Wolverines in front 7-5. The final minute of the first half featured a flurry of goals including three in the final 0:46. The Redhawks cut Michigan's lead to 7-6 but the Wolverines ended the period with two quick scores. Stanley secured the draw and immediately fed freshman Sam Zetlin (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) who beat the Miami defense back to score with 0:22 left on the clock. The Wolverines weren't done scoring as Shekerjian finished a one-timer from Stanley with just three ticks left to make the halftime score 9-6 in favor of Michigan. The Wolverines took control off the second-half whistle, scoring the first three goals. Michigan outscored Miami 8-1 over the first 24 minutes of the period while the outcome was still in doubt. Johnson, Stanley and Mezwa all netted their second goals of the game to break the game open at 12-6. The Redhawks cut the edge to five with 19:18 to play but the Wolverines scored the next five including two more from Johnson, giving her four on the game. Both of Johnson's goals were assisted by Mezwa. Junior Amanda Schutte (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) bounced in a free-position marker and then Mezwa punctuated the 5-0 run by scooping up Boehm's rebound and wrapping around the back of the net to beat the goalie for her first career hat-trick. Mezwa added one last goal for the Wolverines as she won the draw clean and then easily outsprinted the Redhawk defenders for a one-on-one with the goalie. Her fourth goal set a career-high and made the margin 18-10 in favor of the Wolverines. Michigan will return to action at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor with two games next weekend (Mar. 26 and 28) against Western Michigan and Oakland. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM and Sunday's start time is 7:30 PM. Game Notes: Michigan's win avenged a preseason loss to Miami and brought the team above .500 for the first time this season...Zetlin had her multiple-goal streak snapped after scoring two or more goals in the season's first eight games. She did extend her consecutive games with a goal streak to nine..Johnson's hat-trick was her second of the season...Johnson extended her own program-record for goals scored to 142 and points to 177.
