February 7, 2010
Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Adrian
College jumped in front early and used a first half run to
knock off #5 Michigan in the Wolverines' exhibition opener
at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. The Wolverines had trouble
controlling the draw, winning just three in the opening
stanza which led to plentiful offensive opportunities for
the NCAA Division III Bulldogs who came away with a 20-11
victory.
Sophomore goalie
Emmy Scheidt
(Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) played well in the first half,
turning away 8 shots including three-of-five eight-meter
attempts.
Adrian struck first 3:08 into the
contest after gaining possession of the opening draw.
Michigan evened the score two minutes later when junior
tri-captain Britt Boehm
(Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificant) took a feed from
junior Jess Stanley
(Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Marian) and pushed it past
the Adrian goalie.
The Bulldogs would respond with their
second goal of the game before senior
Amy Johnson (Washington,
D.C./Holton-Arms) picked up her first goal of the 2010
campaign when she cut across the crease and dumped a shot
over the goalie's left shoulder.
Michigan took their first lead of the
game a few minutes later when sophomore
Alaina Mezwa (Rochester
Hills, Mich./Sacred Heart) scored her first career goal.
Mezwa, starting behind the goal, rolled across the crease
and found the net from point-blank range.
With the Wolverines in front 3-2, the
Bulldogs started a 7-0 run over 13:45 to take a 9-3 lead.
Michigan got back-to-back goals from
Boehm and Johnson to pull back within four goals at 9-5 but
Adrian managed one more tally before the half to make the
intermission score 10-5 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Michigan struck first to begin the
second half on Boehm's third goal of the game as she bounced
in an eight-meter shot just 0:46 into the half.
After another Adrian score, Michigan
responded with a goal from junior
Amanda Schutte (San
Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) who was assisted by
sophomore Ani
Shekerjian (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit
Country Day).
The Wolverines got consecutive goals
from Johnson and Mezwa to cut the lead down to five at 14-9
but that's as close as they would get before Adrian pulled
away to win comfortably.
Johnson added her fourth of the contest
and freshman Sam Zetlin
(Framingham, Mass./Framingham) netted her first
career marker to cap the Michigan scoring.
Next up for Michigan is a West Coast
trip where the Wolverines will participate in the Santa
Barbara Shootout. Michigan will play four games over the
weekend all against teams ranked in the LAX Magazine
Preseason top-10. On Friday, Feb. 12 Michigan will play #10
UCLA. Saturday will feature two games, first against #3
Colorado and then later in the day against #7 Cal Poly.
Michigan will play one last game Sunday morning against #8
Colorado State.
