Tower

It is a vertical structure, linking HEAVEN and EARTH; in this way akin to a LADDER in its symbolic form. It can be a stronghold, and may be a prison; the tower may signify ascent, and when it contains a VIRGIN or a PRINCESS, might represent a walled garden, as in FAIRY TALES such as "Rapunzel" and science fiction such as Hawthorne's "Rappaccini's Daughter."  In Christianity, the Tower of Babel was built in an attempt to link HEAVEN and EARTH. (Genesis 11:1-9).
