This graph was created from 1990 California Census data. As shown, more than half of all families living in Monterey County have two or more workers per household. This is significant when combined with a previous graph indicating that agriculture in Monterey County is the second largest employer. In short, both of these graphs help illustrate the importance of agriculture to maintaining the economic health of families within the county. Economic health is juxtaposed with documented human and environmental health threats posed by methyl bromide use in agriculture. This threat exists for workers and families in agriculture, as well as those persons living attending public schools adjacent to agricultural fields. This conflict is seen as a choice between economic well-being or human health.
