The frustules of this taxon are quadrate in a girdle view. They are also slighly narrower at one end than the other. The valve is ovate and has rounded apices with one apex wider thatn thee other. It has a distinctive psuedoraphe valve with broad striae. It is most distinguished by its valve shape and occuring in fresh water (Patrick and Reimer 1966).

    New England States, Middle Atlantic States, Southeastern States, Gulf Coast States, South Central States, East Central States, Lakes States, Plains States, Oregon, California(Patrick and Reimer 1966).

  • Synonyms
    Opephora martyi Herib., Diat. Foss. Auvergne, vol. 1, p. 43, pl. 8, fig. 20. 1902 (Patrick and Reimer 1966).
  • Ecology
    This taxon may be found in lakes and rivers and is considered to be alkaliphilous to alkalibionic. It is halobin indifferent and prefers a limnophilous current. It is also eutriphic to mesotrophic ( Lowe 1974 ).
