old wheels from steel-operations in Wales

The Sleeping Giants CD ROM is a tool designed to help other people and groups create powerful and satisfying art works in their communities.

The materials collected on this CD are outcomes of various workshops with mental health system survivors in the Welsh valleys.

At the heart of this art work are the beliefs that

  • mental health system survivors have voices that are an important part of our local community
  • mental health experiences can open up different and creative perspectives on our everyday life and our local landscape
  • we can create powerful art work as a group, taking strength and inspiration from one another.

By using the format of videopoems and website, we present ourselves as full citizens of today's media world. At the same time, the format of these media allow us to speak in creative ways about our differences in experiencing our world, our emotions, our past and our future.

The production of this CD has been made possible by a grant from NESTA, the National Endowment of Science, Technology and the Arts. Additional funds were provided by DACE, the Department of Adult Continuing Education, University of Wales, Swansea.
