Introduce Assignment P7 - Figure Captions

Explain the assignment:

- what they need to do in lab- understand how to format "results1"- copy/paste graphs from Excel into Word
- what they need to do outside of lab- finish the assignment

- what they need to turn in

Go through one set of figure captions using the example figures provided in the Project Requirements document. The bouncin team project can also be used to show how the figure captions should be completed. Explain the following:

- anatomical position

- how increasing and decreasing relate to "flexion" and "extension"

- relate maximum and minimum to peak flexion and peak extension

- relate CW and CCW to direction of segment rotation during movement

- emphasize the difference between absolute and relative angles (e.g., segment angles are absolute measures while joint angles are relative measures). Segment angles are described as rotating CW or CCW within an absolute frame of reference. On the other hand, joint angles are described as the relative angle between two adjacent segments. Joint angles either increases (extension) or decreases (flexion).

- they should use stick figures to help them! Help your teams print out a single frame stick figure for each movement

Each team should work together on one computer. It's time for them to think biomechanically. Make sure each team member is engaged by encouraging cooperative thinking.

Review figure captions during lab

Facilitators should review figure captions during lab:

- if angles are in range of 180-360 instead of 0-180 degrees:

- show them how to recalculate joint angles

- use paste special (values) when pasting values copied from cells which contain formulas to generate the values

- check to see if their interpretations make sense

- encourage the use of accurate biomechanical and anatomical language!

Make backup copies at end of lab

- make sure each team backs up their work:

- copy contents of most up-to-date ZIP disk to each member's disk

- emphasize importance of making backups each time they work

- remind them of the "click of death"
