August 28, 2002 "Missing Miriam"

NEW
On this date, Simon received his own stem cells as a bone marrow transplant. I found these notes. It's not really a quote, but more a description of an interaction. Simon was in tears, missing Miriam. He was thinking about a special gift from her (something with peanut butter), and that he hadn't liked the gift. He was worried that she hadn't visited him because she was feeling bad that he didn't like her gift. Actually, Miriam was not permitted into his room at that point, due to his extremely low immunity. (Children under the age of 14 are considered a higher risk as germ carriers.)

So, Simon started to think about having a gift exchange with Miriam. His ideas were to give her a "medium-sized doll, clothes, and a little pillow, blanket and equipment stuff" (pacifier, etc.). It also seems he proposed that I knit a sweater in Augustina's size. Augustina was Simon and Miriam's favorite baby-sitter in Ann Arbor.

NEW
Simon: "Mom, are you coming to play cars with me?"
Mary: "Im not sure I know how to play cars. What do I do?"
Simon: "You just play with them, that's all. You pick them up and make them talk to each other and stuff."
