  • Hey, guys, it was *really* good to meet/see all of you this past weekend in Oberlin -- even got to see Grann and Grandad briefly! Also met some other folks in town who, as we do, enjoy visiting this wonderful web site. You're really bringing a lot of people together from all over the place, and that's pretty cool!

Take care, and we'll hope we don't have to wait for another 20th reunion to see you all again! ;-) Love,

Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura Hopkins

  • Simon, Happy (belated) 5th Birthday! I just read about your party and it sounds like it was a blast!! We are so bummed to have missed it. With this topsy turvy weather, we've all had yucky colds (even missed Gari's last week!) and thus couldn't make it. Glad to hear that you all had such a great time!! Hope to see you at Gari's soon (missed you and Miriam this morn) take care! Much Love, Jane, Abbey, Kate and Eric

  • Hi Simon,
I've read your website frequently, but for some unknown reason I just decided that today was the day to send a note. Your Mom and I grew up together in Oberlin, and it seems like we've been friends forever.

Right now Alex, my 7yr old son, and his dad are floating around in a paddleboat on our pond - Alex likes to try and catch the many frogs that live there. So far he's only caught the tiny ones (not much bigger than your thumb!), but he's just as much a fighter as you seem to be, and I'm sure he'll catch one of the big guys soon.

I love reading all the notes here - some from people I know but haven't talked to in years, and some from people I've never met, but know they must be special since they're friends of yours.

Keep up the great work with your treatments, and we'll keep sending our prayers and positive thoughts to you.

    Love, Jean

  • Hi Simon:
Hearing about your Gallup Park B-day party almost makes us homesick! Weather is just as strange here in Germany sometimes, though. That is so cool that Gemini was there! I think they've become Simon groupies!
Glad to hear the good news of smaller tumors. We'll keep praying!

  • Hi Simon and all the rest of the family...what a great birthday party that was! I thought of all of us freezing when I drove by Gallup Park today and it was over 70 degrees. I loved hearing San and Laz, and thank you for the great cake, too...and the boiling HOT coffee! Being 5 is really VERY SPECIAL and I'm sure you'll always remember this birthday...keep up the good work you're doing in chemo, and enjoy this better weather at last.
Love to all, Jane P.S. I haven't forgotten the cupcakes I put in the freezer...someday soon I'll bring them.

  • Dear Simon, what a birthday party! I haven't had that much fun since I was 5. Your cake was the biggest that I have ever seen and I loved eating it. I know it was a cold day, but I felt so warm listening to Gemini sing and watching all of your friends playing and running in the wind. Thank you for having me. I can't wait to see the quilt when it is all done. And those dinosaurs, WOW, with such cool tails. I hope you continue coming to music class. Much love always, Gari

  • Hi Simon -

It's great to read that your medicine is helping and you're doing so well. If I'm lucky, you'll take a break from your medicine and come to visit Grandma and Grandpa in Oberlin this weekend. Grandpa is getting a big award from the place where he worked. I hope you can come see it. If you are there, maybe we can visit. I would like to meet you.

Our prayers continue to come your way!
    Have a great day!

  • Simon, Happy Birthday (a little late). I have not visited your website lately and love your pictures from the zoo. I would love to go to your zoo with sometime. We live a little far away, but maybe if we get out that way you could take me to the zoo? I am wondering if you know about a very animal called the Capybarra ( I think that is the right spelling). The Capybarra is a cross between a hippo and a Guinea Pig. I know that sounds kinda funny, but they are pretty cute. I am wondering if you have one at your zoo? Well continue on the right track and we are always thinkd about you and your family. Take Care.

  • Happy Birthday Simon!!! I can't believe you are already 5 years old. I remember my 5th birthday like it was yesterday. I told my mom that since I was now 5 I was going to like peanut butter and jelly. So I made her make me a pbj for lunch that day. I ate 1/2 of the sandwich and have not eaten pbj since then. That was oooh sooo many years ago! My advice to you...if there is some food out there you don't like, you probably won't like it once you turn 5. Have a great day! I'm sorry we are unable to come to your party. Even though we are not there, we will send you our positive energy and prayers.
Warm Wishes, Sheryl, Todd, Hunter & Lexi Smith

  • Wow! Simon, I was just popping onto your site to send some birthday greetings (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!), when I saw the good news about those test results. Awesome! Terrific! Phenomenal! Way to go! You, your family, and your doctors have been doing such wonderful work together. What fantastic news to have in time for your 5th birthday! Keep it up, buddy -- you're doing a great job.

And this time, instead of a joke to share, I've brought you a link to an interesting web site (http://www.holidays.net/shavuot/) that's all about another celebration happening today: Shavuot, which is a Jewish holiday surrounding the first harvest of the spring. While I'm not Jewish myself, I like the idea of celebrating a first harvest, because a harvest makes me think of "life" and "hope." And that makes me think of you, too, because you're so very full of both of them! :-) So enjoy your special day, and know that a lot of people around the world are celebrating the day with you!

Love, Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura Hopkins

P.S. I'm so excited: my family and I are going to Oberlin next weekend for my reunion! Maybe we'll see some of your Oberlin family members or First Church friends while we're there. Bye!

  • Dear Simon,
I have just visited your website for the first time and think it is just a great place! How wonderful to have your very own web address where we can all get news of you and see pictures of your adventures and you can get messages from us!

I particularly liked the pictures of the birds from your visit to the Toledo Zoo. I have heard it is a wonderful place and I think the pictures of your trip confirm this! I have a birdfeeder in my backyard that I watch while I sit in my kitchen and I see lots of birds and squirrels that come to visit. Sometimes they're pretty funny to watch, particularly when the little red squirrel chases the bigger fox squirrels away. He can just run lickety-split! There's a big black cat that stops by too, that makes everything run lickety-split.

I am also excited to hear the good news that your cancer is getting smaller. (You must be very glad to hear this too...) So all of your hard work and the help of all of people helping you and thinking about you must be doing its job! Last week I went camping for the women's retreat at church and we all sent lots of love and positive thoughts to you and Miriam and your Mom and Dad while we were there. So when you go to the hospital this week remember all those good thoughts and prayers that everyone is thinking about you!

    Love,
    Trish

  • Hi, Simon! It's been a reeeeeally long time since I've written, but don't let that fool you -- you're in our thoughts EVERY day! We've just been a little busy at our house lately. But the good news is, during all this time I've been asking Danny, our resident joke-man, to scrounge up some good jokes for you. I see you're getting ready for some scans and stuff this week, but if you promise not to get too giggly and wiggly while they're scanning you, I'll write here some of the new jokes Dan has found. (By the way, this batch all comes from one of our kids' favorite magazines, National Geographic World -- do you know that mag? It's very cool! One of Danny's favorite articles reminded me of you: it's all about a man who likes to take pictures of volcanos ... sometimes *while* they're erupting! Wow. Anyway, I thought about your volcano pose and that your volcano is filled with LIFE -- a very rich and wonderful thing to be filled with. Awesome.) So here are three new jokes -- Q: What goes up but never comes down? A: Your age! (You have a birthday coming up, so that one seemed appropriate!)
Q: Why did the clockmaker enjoy his vacation? A: Because he learned how to unwind! (And here comes our personal favorite....) Q: Why do cows wear bells? A: Because their horns don't work!

More later. In the meantime, keep smiling, keep growing and getting stronger, and (because you're so good at it already!) keep that volcano filled with all sorts of wonderful things like life and love! Our very best to all of you,

Kris, Rob, Emily, Danny, and Laura Hopkins

  • Hi Simon,
We thought of you today as we were watching a pair of rose-breasted grosbeaks on our birdfeeder this morning! They were beautiful next to a bunch of goldfinches with their bright yellow jackets. Unfortunately, though, some bird decided to poop RIGHT THROUGH our screen and onto our front door this morning! Noone is volunteering to scrub it off, so I guess I'll have to do that today!
We are keeping you in our prayers and sending lots of love and positive vibes your way this week as you get your tests done.
Please give lots of hugs to your mom, dad, and Miriam...and a great big one to yourself!

I think about you every day.
