In front of Tiananmen Gate, Beijing, China
The Tiananmen Gate opened to the public on July 1, 1988. A portrait of Chairman Mao is flanked on both sides by slogans crying Long Live the People's Republic of China and Long Live the Unity of the Peoples of the World. One summer evening on August 18, 2005, groups of visitors sat along the edge of an undisturbed grass plot before the great Gate: (from the top right) three friends exchanging stories, two lovers sharing a quiet moment (liberated from confining shoes), and one man, absorbed in typing a text message.
