Wk 1 - Celebrating Einstein's Year of Discovery

During the Fall semester, 2005, LSA is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Einstein's year of great discoveries, which many recognize as the beginning of the era of truly modern physics. Einstein's discoveries pre-date the years covered in History 285 (1945-2005) but they do establish part of the foundation on which modern science is built. Whether justified or not, Einstein has also come to symbolize what is generally thought of as modern science. It is therefore helpful to know something about Einstein and his discoveries as we begin our study of modern science.

We will begin our reading, therefore, with some background information on Einstein contained on The Center for History of Physics (American Institute of Physics) webpage: "Einstein: Image and Impact." Read the first two sections, through "The Great Works - 1905," available either as html or pdf.
