The University of Michigan Student Greens was founded in the
Fall of 2000 around the Nader 2000 campaign and several local Green Party
campaigns. These campaigns included one
of our own members, Scott Trudeau, running for university regent. After the election was over, the UM Student
Greens began pursuing other activities on campus, the high point of the 2000-01
school year being a teach-in on SDI Missile Defense.
Over the summer, the UM Student Greens became members of
the Campus Greens, a national coalition of student Green organizations, and
sent a large delegation to the Campus Greens founding convention in
Chicago. At this convention the bylaws
and vision statement of the national organization were written by delegates
from about 100 schools across the nation and a national steering committee was
elected.
For the 2001-02 school year, the UM Student Greens have a
lot planned including actions around the meeting of the IMF/WB in Washington
DC, local Green Mike Nowak’s campaign for city council, and stopping the
construction of a waste water incinerator in Ypsilanti.
We are always looking for new members and new ideas for
events and campaigns. If you are
interested, please check our calendar for meeting and event dates.
