Studs Lonigan

Studs Lonigan, a novel by James T. Farrell, tells the story of a young Irish boy living in Chicago. When studs in a young teen, he describes his feelings towards 'lesser' races, such as Poles, Jews, and African Americans. In the second volume of the novel, Studs participates in the infamous Chicago race riots and we learn what it was like to grow up in a time of such racial and societal unrest. Though his race riot experience is only a few pages in the novel, this small section gives great insight into the importance or race in Chciago during this period as well as the consequences of different races competing for the same housing and jobs.
