BETH SMILEY
Research Associate II

I wish to overexpress BMP4 in the hair cells of mouse ears. If hair
cells can be induced to express proteins normally expressed by their progenitor cells, they may be able to regenerate.

When I’m not cloning genes or engaged in tissue culture work, I am usually shamelessly spoiling my two dogs, Skinny Minnie (who isn’t so skinny anymore) and Bella Chow (who turned out to be a Belgian Sheepdog rather than a chow).

I also volunteer at Therapeutic Riding, Inc. This program teaches physically and/or mentally challenged people to ride horses. It is wonderful to see the smiles on the kids’ faces. Everyone has a great time—the kids, the horses and the volunteers.
