Sylvia
Hurtado:
Dr.
Hurtado is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan
Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education.
She serves on numerous national executive and editorial boards
for research and practice in the field of higher education and
is well known to campuses regarding her research on diversity
in higher education. Her book, "Enacting Diverse Learning
Environments" summarizes the research for use in institutional
practice, and her most recent book, "Intergroup Dialogue:
Deliberative Democracy in Schools, Colleges, Workplace and Community",
highlights research and practices for living in a diverse democracy.
She has conducted surveys and campus case studies in several
national higher education studies, including: survey development
for the Cooperative Institutional Research Program, as Principal
Investigator of the National Longitudinal Study of Hispanic
College Students at predominantly white and Hispanic Serving
Institutions, and in Improving Teaching, Learning and Assessment
as part of the OERI-sponsored, National Center for Postsecondary
Improvement.

Doctoral Research Fellow
Larry
Rowley: Dr. Rowley is a second year postdoctoral research
fellow at the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary
Education and the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies.
His research interests include organizational analyses of the
public service/civic mission of higher education, urban university-community
relations, and the role of race and racism in the social and
intellectual experiences of African Americans in the modern
academy.
Graduate
Research Staff
Mark Engberg: Engberg is
a doctoral student at the Center for the Study of Higher and
Postsecondary Education. His research interests include civic
education, the role of diversity in promoting the attainment
of civic values, and the influence of service and community-based
learning on cognitive, social, and democratic outcomes.
Shirley
Greene: Greene
is a second year doctoral student in the Center for the Study
of Higher and Postsecondary Education. Her research interests
include institutional leadership, diversity, and historically
black colleges and universities. She completed her undergraduate
work at Spelman College and her graduate work at Clark-Atlanta
University.
Mark
Kamimura:
Kamimura is a first year Ph.D. student in Higher Education and
concentrating in Public Policy. His current research interest
are in the area of public policy development and implementation,
specifically looking at its affects on communities of color.
He would like to explore further the triangular relationship
of K-12, Higher Education and Public Policy have on each other
and how this function affects society.
Luis
Ponjuan:
Ponjuan is a CSPHE doctoral student working on the Diverse Democracy
Project. His research interest is organizational theory in higher
education. He is currently working on the Diverse Democracy
Project's institutional survey analysis.
Gilia Smith:
Gilia is a second year doctoral student pursuing a concentration
in organizational theory at the Center for the Study of Higher
and Postsecondary Education. Her current research focuses on
institutional leave policy and its impact on female faculty.
