Updating on every write might be painful for some applications especially if
replication was involved but waiting for an orderly shutdown also seems
unduly risky. A timer based solution based on a configuration file entry
sems a good compromise, people who who want the current behaviour could
update the index files every 24 hours or so, others could wind it back to
every second (if, of course any, changes had been made).
