LDAP automatic string translations and jpegs

Having being able to store jpegs and retrieve them correctly I've
now configured automatic character string translation with the
t61/8859 option. My t61/8859 conversions all work fine, however my
jpegs come back larger than when they went in and slightly
corrupted (somtimes twice as big). Even using the ldapadd/
ldapsearch tools returns a corrupted object.

Does anyone know if this is a problem with the LDAP library or
should I disable automatic translation and convert each string
manually based on the fact that I know which are jpegs and which
will be text strings?
