More about the referral object class

This is a follow up to my last post (I can't quote 'cos it hasn't been sent
to me yet). The reason I couldn't list the referral object class on my local
server was because I had the wrong tail to the referral dn. However the
referrals do not appear to be sent to the other host by ldapsearch - this is
with *no* referral line in my slapd config file.

I have been operating under the assumption that referral objects contain
explicit referral links similar to mount points in a file system, the config
referral host is a default backstop for anything not found locally *or*
matched by a referral object - this appears not to be the case.

My new question is this:

Do referral objects act independantly of the config referral host or do the
referral objects cause referral to be sent to the host specified in the
config file?

If the former then I am still doing something wrong and would welcome
assistance from someone who has sucessfully used referral objects. If the
latter then what use are referral objects as any nonlocal reference goes to
the config referral host anyway.

Cheers,

Ed Oskiewicz
