Windows 4GL Application Development

Greetings,

I am a member of a project team tasked with migrating our
home-grown WHOIS directory to a standards based solution
that is likely to include LDAP/X.500. Lately there have been
(at times heated) discussions involving how we might integrate
LDAP functionality into our (proprietory) Windows 4GL application
used for problem tracking. This application is relatively lightweight,
allowing the user to call Transact/SQL procedures stored on a
Sybase RDBMS as well as to perform some ad hoc SQL queries against
both the data warehouse and other (dynamic) databases. The developers
and proponents of this application support using this "Super-client"
to query and update our X.500 directory as well. It seems to me that
our choices are to either jury-rig an SQL-to-LDAP gateway (not!) or to
rewrite the 4GL application with GUI based controls that call LDAP routines
from dynamic link libraries. Am I missing something? Is there an easier
way? I welcome any and all suggestions from ANYONE who has either faced
this dilemma or worked on 4GL LDAP front-ends. HELP!
