I had the same problem bringer up ldap 3.3 until I used:

THREADSLIB=-threads

in the Make-Common. I also am using Berkeley's binary tree db for the ldbm
backend, as several have mentioned problems using ndbm with Dec Unix. I have
been running slapd on Dec Unix for the last couple of weeks without a hitch.
