mount soapbox:

I am not mad (either interpretation) but I just don't get it... I
compiled slapd using the gdbm libraries and sucessfully got the server to
run with our entire database of 8088 entries. The source ldif.data file is
a whopping 1.05 mb. The data structures are pretty much like the examples
in the quick-start guide. While executing, slapd consumes 46 mb of memory
space. Side effects are that bootpd fails every night and my perl
programs complain that they are out of memory. My swap partition is 190080
blocks (although my actual ram is only 32mb). Am I the only one who has
missed the point of this exercise or is my denial merely confirmation? no
replies are really neccessary.

dismount soapbox.
