Washtenaw County is in southeast Michigan. Washtenaw County is immediately west of Wayne County and approximately 40 miles from the metropolitan Detroit area. The county seat is Ann Arbor, the largest city in the county. Ann Arbor adjoins Ypsilanti, the second largest city, which is immediately east from Ann Arbor. Washtenaw County has all types of habitat. There is good birding around the county in all seasons. The best birding sites within Ann Arbor itself are Nichol's Arboretum ("the arb"), Matthaei Botanical Gardens, and Dolph Park. For birders who plan to bird parts of the county outside of Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, a county map is a must. An excellent map is available at no cost from the Washtenaw County Road Commission. The road commission is on Zeeb Road just off I-94 approximately four miles west of Ann Arbor. Take either I-94 or Jackson Road to the Zeeb Road and go north an eighth of a mile. It is on the west side of the road. The Washtenaw County Road Commission offices are open from 7:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday. They are not open on Saturdays.
