This is the only patch of virgin beech-maple woods in Michigan, to my knowledge. It's pretty moving to see beeches that tower up to 150 feet before branching, and this is a good place to find Hooded Warblers, Yellow-throated Warblers (along the river), Pileated Woodpeckers, and many other great birds. I never travel to Chicago without stopping at this place for at least a brief stroll. Be forewarned, though, that your appreciation for the beauty of this spot will probably be mixed with sorrow at the loss of almost all of this habitat.
