Good birding sites along the stretch of Hwy 2 east of Toledo In order out of Toledo as you're driving east, good birding stops are (1) Maumee Bay State Park, (2) Metzger Marsh Wildlife Area, (3) Krause Road wildlife observation parking area, (4) Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, and (5) Crane Creek State Park (Magee Marsh Wildlife Area). To get to Metzger Marsh: Go east past the turnoff to Maumee Bay State Park. After a few miles you'll see a sign for DG's (hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream) and a sign for Econo Lodge. Keep going. You will soon enter and pass through the small town of Bono. You'll see a sign marking Bono. A quarter mile ahead the road makes a sweeping turn to the right. A short distance into the turn is an exit (left) to Metzger Marsh. Watch carefully for the sign for Metzger Marsh. Turn to the right immediately after you have turned left off Hwy 2, and follow a long straight road between fields on both sides of the road. You'll come to a left turn in the road near a motor home park across a channel. Keep following the road. The road turns to the right after a quarter mile. Follow the long straight stretch to the end of the road and park in the parking lot. There are woods on two sides of the parking lot. These woods are very good for neotropical migrants. Often, you can get two-thirds as many warblers here in one hour as you can get at Magee Marsh (Crane Creek SP) in a morning, and a couple of them will be different from any you found at Magee Marsh. In some years and in some weeks the impoundment to the right side of the last long stretch of the road is worth examining for Yellow-headed Blackbirds or shorebirds (if the impoundment has been drained) or waterfowl. Also see the file "Crane Creek State Park" (with directions to Crane Creek State Park) for more information. CCSP is about 22 miles east of Toledo.
