Gooding Rd. sod farm, Washtenaw County ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Gooding Rd. sod farm is just east of Milan. From Ann Arbor take U.S. 23 south to Willis Rd. (about six miles). Go east on Willis a quarter of a mile to Carpenter Rd. and turn south. Go three miles to Willow Rd. and turn east. Continue a couple of miles to Gooding Rd. and turn south. The sod farm field where shorebirds are found is on the left (east) side of the road. In late August 2004 a Buff-breasted Sandpiper and several Baird's were spending most of their time near the south end of the field (toward the railroad track) and near to the road. This field has also produced Black-bellied Plovers and American Golden-Plovers. The best way to get there is to take US-23 south from Ann Arbor, get off at Arkona Road (Milan exit) and go east about a mile and a half to Gooding (a small dirt road). You go north almost a mile and after crossing the railroad tracks you'll see the sod farm on the right. There were hundreds of killdeers and many horned larks there when I was there. The golden plovers are much bigger and stick out but they may be far from the road so take a scope. Good luck! Rick
