GLASS" Subject: Re: Sub-adult SAPSUCKER in Fuller Park 3-9 To: bbowman@umich.edu Bruce: Sorry it took me so long to get back but I don't have access to E-mail at home and only get to the library when on some errand near there. I saw it a little more often when I had this account at EMU College of Ed, but I graduated. The account lives on, at least for this semester. Fuller Park is across from the UM Medical Center. There is a public swimming pool there. It consists mostly of soccer fields which are used mostly after 3 PM or so, and on weekends. However, along the river there are strips of woods with mature trees, and a couple of lines of trees which separate the fields into 3 parts, as well as a wooded area with a boardwalk through it. A strange place with no understory or herb layer to speak of, just mud. It is located at the intersection of Fuller and Maiden Lane. On the other side of the river we have Island Park and Cedar Bend Nature Area both established in 1905. There is a foot bridge so it can be accessed from Island Park, or a big parking area near the pool. I send in these tidbits because I have this fascination with nature in urban/semi-urban settings. Fuller Park is just a big lawn except for the strips I mentioned, but it is amazing to me what I end up seeing there. I also keep my eye on Cedar Bend and my wife and I do a breeding bird survey there each spring/summer for Natural Area Preservation, Parks Dept. I also recently developed a brochure for it for NAP. Question for you. I want to report interesting sightings in a way in which they will best be used, not just for birding but as some kind of ornithological records. I would assume the ones published in, is it "Michigan Natural History" would be my best bet. How should I get started? Hope this helps. Thanks for E-mailing me.
