Delhi Overlook -------------- Delhi Overlook is a short road four or five miles west and north of Ann Arbor. In many years a Northern Shrike remains there for several weeks during the months of November, December, and January. Strangely, this is a location where a Northern Mockingbird has sometimes been found in the winter as well. A large field north of the road and to the west of the pond (see below) has been an excellent woodcock site, too, in late March and early April. To get to Delhi Overlook take Huron River Drive westward out of Ann Arbor. (To get to Huron River Drive you can take the No. Main Street exit off M-14. Then turn right almost immediately onto Huron River Drive and follow the river.) A little less than five miles along Huron River Drive you'll come to North Delhi. This is about a mile past Tubbs Road and a couple of miles before Zeeb Road. Turn right and drive to the top of the hill. There you'll see a street sign for Delhi Overlook. Turn (right) onto Delhi Overlook and drive 1/3? 1/2? mile to a pond off the left side of the road. In this vicinity there are several widely separated tall trees. Start looking for the shrike before you get to the pond. It may be found sitting on top of any of the tall trees. It seems to prefer the tree nearest the pond. If the shrike is perched, you'll have no problem getting an excellent view. It's skittish, though, and is likely to fly if you get out of the car. You might want to stop well short of the shrike if you see it and get out of the car to use your scope. Bruce
