Rouge River Bird Observatory (RRBO) -- Univ of Mich - Dearborn ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Rouge River Bird Observatory is at the campus of the University of Michigan, Dearborn, in Dearborn, Michigan. The offices and labs are in the Environmental Interpretive Center (EIC) at the corner of Monteith Boulevard and Fairlane Drive. (See the maps.) To get there go to the Southfield Freeway (M-39) and take it to either Ford Road (M-153) or Michigan Avenue (US-12). Go west about a mile to Evergreen Road. Turn south from Ford Road or north from Michigan Avenue. Drive about a mile to Monteith Boulevard and take it west into the UM-D campus. Bird at the Rose Garden, the woods, the swamp, the old field north of the swamp, the brush dump, the Community Organic Garden, and at the margins of Jensen's Meadow. The Rouge River bounds the area on the west. See Julie Craves' book for more information: Birds of Southeast Michigan: Dearborn, Wayne County. It's available at Barnes and Noble. Exit at Michigan Ave. west. Soon after you cross back over the overpass there'll be a light; you'll want to go right there - it's Evergreen. Follow the signs for the Ford/Fairlane estate: it'll be a brown sign. You'll have to do a U turn to get there - it's got one of those turnarounds ala Briarwood Mall area. It'll be the first or second turnaround, and there will be a brown sign just before it. I'm not sure where the parking lot is - I always parked at the banding barn! and you can't do that without a permit. I'm sure there will be a sign. Drabenstott" Subject: U of M Dearborn Dearborn has several things going for it: (1) birds, especially on the ground and at eye level, (2) parking (if you don't have a university sticker, park at the Henry Ford Estate; it might cost a few bucks), (3) washrooms, and the (4) University Mall for a good, inexpensive lunch. It's worth the trip. Take M-14 east, I-275 south, Ford Road (#153) east, right turn onto Evergreen, and finally a right turn into UM-Dearborn. You can also take Ford Road east to Evergreen (just one right turn for the entire drive). It's hardly an hour drive from Ann Arbor and there's no major construction if you take the roads cited here. Parking at the Henry Ford Estate parking lot is closest to the action and perfectly free. Walk right in behind the estate and start birding! Early in the morning, most birds are on the sunny (west) side of the main meadow running north from the estate to the lake. Just a reminder to visitors to *please* avoid the east side of the lake just north of the main meadow during weekdays when we're banding. We have a real problem with people strolling (or jogging) through there, scaring the birds that are in the nets or those that are not away from the nets! Signs are posted. All's clear by 11 AM or noon most days even when we're banding. Many thanks. Julie A.
