Barton Pond ~~~~~~~~~~~ Barton Pond is the wide section of the Huron River between the Foster Road bridge and Barton Dam (which is just west of North Main). Take Huron River Drive west off No. Main Street in Ann Arbor (near the exit from M-14). Barton Dam is less than half a mile ahead. From: Self To: birders@umich.edu Subject: (Fwd) Barton Pond? Date sent: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 13:47:44 -0500 Joe, I think you meant to send this to birders@umich.edu, not me. I'll answer your questions, though. First, let me correct something in your message lest it confuse some people not familiar with Ann Arbor. You got off M-14, not U.S. 23, and onto North Main, not Huron River Drive. This is on the west side of town just past the bridge over the Huron River. M-14 and U.S. 23 share an east-west stretch of a few miles across the north side of town. When U.S. 23 turns north toward Flint, M-14 continues west and then southwest until it ends at I-94 on the west side. After exiting M-14 at North Main you make almost an immediate right onto Huron River Drive. Barton Park (Barton Dam) is a fraction of a mile west along the river. The (very) wide part of the river west of the dam is called Barton Pond. (You were there.) The Arb is east of Main Campus. The main entrance is at the crest of Geddes, maybe 1/3 to 1/2 mile east from the Forrest/South University/ Observatory area. From Huron Parkway and Geddes (near the golf course) it is 1 1/2 miles (guess) west. To: bbowman@umich.edu Reply-to: PEPSIJOE12@aol.com Hello Birders! Took my first trip to Ann Arbor to do some birding at Barton Pond. I've been reading a lot of messages about that place, and thought I'd give it a look. I got off US23 and onto Huron River Dr., then parked at the Barton Park sign. Walked across the Huron on the bridge and followed the trails around abit. Crossed the tracks in two places, but didn't see any ponds, or lakes? I may need better directions for my next trip there. I did see several Field Sparrows, a pair of Broad-Winged Hawks, and a Great Egret on the way. Bye the way, what area exactly is the Arb? A Birder From Highland JOE
