Narco corridos became popular in the 1970's with the help of Los Tigres del Norte.  These are more modern corridos from the Mexican Revolution.  Instead of folk heroes, migrant workers, and illegal immigrants, these corridos lyrics are  about drug smugglers, and within these lyrics, they seem to be approving these activities. Since this content is so controversial, it has been compared to Gangsta Rap which also features crime as a its main content.  Both of these styles are so controversial that there has been talk about them being banned.  The solution in the United States has been the content advisory on the CDs which stops children from buying the songs until they are old enough.  The solution in the borderlands has been volunteer banning by radio stations, major companies, and recently a proposal by the President of Mexico, Vicente Fox. The main goal of banning these songs is to not allow the criminals in the songs to be the heroes of the children.  The latest controversy about Narco corridos is the 2004 narco corrido "Las Mujeres de Juarez" by Los Tigres del Norte.  This narco corrido is about the killings of young women workers from the maquiladoras.  Within the lyrics page is the link to this narco corrido, there is no doubt that this content is grim but it is also true life, which you cannot ban. 4
